Brain Wellness

Poor brain health manifests in many ways, including depression, anxiety, poor memory, ADD/ADHD and Memory Loss. Dr. Maria is an expert in helping discover the best way to improve brain function. Please read on to learn about the different modalities we use.

Functional Neurology

In Functional Neurology, we are looking at functional aspects of the brain. A neurological exam is performed to discover if certain areas of the brain are mis-firing. It is very common to find that a specific area is weaker than the rest of the brain. You've heard the saying "a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link". The same is true with the brain. If an area of weakness is discovered you are given brain specific exercises to strengthen that area. It helps the overall brain to function better. This is quite different than traditional neurology where the physician is looking for disease rather than function.

Concussion Prevention and Recovery

Concussions can be tricky to diagnose. Though you may have a visible cut or bruise on your head, you can't actually see a concussion. Signs may not appear for days or weeks after the injury and can include headache, pain and stiffness, poor concentration, imbalance, dizziness, digestive upset and posture changes. Left untreated, these can lead to more problems and pre-dispose a person to more injuries.

Using principles of Functional Neurology, we do physiological testing to determine where brain imbalance is and then provide the right activation to bring it back to balance. This application is valuable in preventing concussion as well as providing a much quicker recovery.

Detoxification

Toxins can have a devastating effect on the brain. 35% of the population genetically is unable to detoxify efficiently, and even here in our lovely environment of the Wood River Valley we are exposed to many chemicals. Pesticides and herbicides, for example, are used abundantly in landscaping practices. We also get them blown in from all the agriculture in our state. Household cleaners and off gassing from new furniture or building materials is another common sources of toxic chemicals. Our bodies just were not designed to handle the 80,000 chemicals used in our daily lives.

We use very specific protocols to target the cells and particularly the cells of the brain. This is not the same as a cleanse or a general detox. If you suffer from brain fog, poor learning or any other brain related symptoms, a proper detoxification may be the answer. In the office, there a some simple test that can be done to determine your level of toxicity.

Network Spinal Analysis

The light touch method of chiropractic we offer is an effective means of re-establishing proper nerve flow between the brain and the body. In office, we frequently see improvements in clinically repeatable parameters for brain function with just one adjustment.

Functional Medicine

The brain is dependent on proper bio-chemistry. This would include neurotransmitter availability, hormone function and energy production at the cellular level. Functional medicine is a specialty that looks at all the biochemical functioning of the body. When imbalances are found, supplements, diet or lifestyle factors are addressed to restore biochemical harmony within the body and the brain.

Gut - Brain Axis

Chronic digestive problems can lead to poor brain function. It is always important to review any digestive symptoms and their effect on the brain. Food sensitivity, improper bacterial growth, acid reflux, diarrhea/constipation and bloating are most common.
